What Is The Minium Required California SR22 Auto Insurance Coverage?
Reader question:
What kind of coverage am I required to have on my California SR22 auto insurance policy?
Gabby
Thank you for asking, Gabby.
California SR22 auto insurance is expensive, so it’s important to know what is required for it and what isn’t so that you can make an intelligent choice in regards to paying more for something that you are not required to have. While many owners of a California SR22 auto insurance policy might prefer to play it safe, others might want to save money in any way they can by cutting their coverage to the minimum required by the state of California. This minimum requirement for your California SR22 auto insurance policy is:
- $15,000 for the death/injury of a single person
- $30,000 for the death/injury of more than one person
- $10,000 for damage of property
These coverages are called liability coverage, and their purpose on your California SR22 auto insurance policy is to protect you from lawsuits and financial ruin in the case of an accident for which you are found at fault.
Your California SR22 auto insurance liability coverage does not cover any damages or injury to your own person, but only that of the person who you crash into, and their property. Even if you crash into some of your own property you would still not be covered under the liability part of your California SR22 auto insurance policy.
If you want to be covered for this, then you will need to purchase collision coverage. You can also add comprehensive coverage to your California SR22 auto insurance policy to protect yourself from damage outside of a car accident. If you are buying or leasing a car, then these types of coverage may be required by the terms of your contract, if not by California SR22 auto insurance law.
