What Happens If I Cancel My SR22 Insurance Policy?
Reader’s Question:
Do I have to start the three years all over again if I canceled my sr-22 because of non payment and I purchase it again?

Good Question Mae.
This scenario actually depends on the state you are in. State laws differ on the time period that you must keep the sr-22 or the financial responsibility certificate if you will need to start all over again or start the remaining time period where you left off. In most states, you will be required to restart after you reinstate the policy with an sr-22.
Some states would require you to reestablish a proof of that remaining three year period if you want to reapply for the certificate of financial responsibility after canceling it within the required period to carry it.
In Texas , for instance, the insurance company will send notification to the Department of Public Safety once the policy has been cancelled or terminated. If the sr-22 is still required to be carried by the individual but she/he cancels it, the driving privilege and the vehicle registration will be suspended. If the person needs to re purchase the policy, the remainder period should begins from the date the proof of financial responsibility was required.
Most of the states may require you to restart the whole period. You may check with the Department of Motor Vehicle in your state to verify if you will need to restart all over again or you can carry the sr-22 for the remainder of the three year period where you left off.
Goodluck!
