Reader question:

What type of coverage am I required to have on my Ohio SR22 insurance policy?

Anne

Great question, Anne.

When you go to buy your Ohio SR22 insurance policy, it’s important to know what you need to get, because a mistake could cost you your driver’s license. There’s not a chance that a legitimate Ohio SR22 insurance company will sell you less than the state required minimum coverage, but it’s still important to be aware of the coverage that you have to have in order to meet the requirements of Ohio SR22 insurance law. Here is the minimum coverage that you must have on your Ohio SR22 insurance policy:

  • $12,500 in bodily injury liability for a single person
  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability for more than one person
  • $7,500 in property damage liability

Ohio SR22 insurance law requires less liability insurance coverage, in terms of the dollar limits, than most states. Part of this is because of the cost of living which makes prices lower in Ohio, but you should also consider getting higher dollar limits on your policy because it’s very easy to go over twelve thousand dollars of bodily injury liability.

If you are driving in Ohio, then you need to be able to provide proof that you have an Ohio SR22 insurance policy when it is required of you. You might be asked to show proof of Ohio SR22 insurance in the following situations:

  • If you receive a ticket or citation.
  • If you pass a police checkpoint.
  • If you are submitted to a random insurance check.
  • If you must go to traffic court.

There are a few ways for you to prove that you have Ohio SR22 insurance coverage, although the main one which will be filed with the bureau of motor vehicles is your SR22 form. However, in other situations you can use the following.

  • Your Ohio SR22 insuranc card.
  • A surety bond.
  • Your Ohio SR22 insurance policy.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.
