Reader question:
What kind of insurance coverage am I required to carry on my Illinois SR22 insurance policy?
Mack
Thanks for asking, Mack.
As an Illinois driver, you will be required to have the minimum liability coverage on your Illinois SR22 insurance policy. This will apply to you whether you own a car or not. So long as you have your license not suspended, you must have some kind of Illinois SR22 insurance coverage because that is what is required by law. There are more consequences than simply losing your license for those that drive without Illinois SR22 insurance coverage, as well. You are required to have minimum coverage in the following.
- $20,000 for death or injury of a single person
- $40,000 for death or injury of multiple people
- $15,000 for property damage
While the above Illinois SR22 insurance coverage does not cover you yourself, it does save you from financial hardship which would be caused if you got into an accident that was your fault and you did not have minimum liability coverage. In fact, in order to make sure that you are covered in a case such as this, most Illinois SR22 insurance companies suggest that you up your coverage to the hundred thousands. This is only a suggestion, not a requirement.
If you are pulled over by a police officer, you are required by law to provide proof that you have Illinois SR22 insurance coverage. This is different from the proof of insurance SR22 form that is filed with the department of motor vehicles. Instead, you will need to show your Illinois SR22 insurance card. If you don’t, then you will have to go to court and show it then. If you do not have an Illinois SR22 insurance card, then you will be fined at least five hundred dollars and your registration will be suspended.
