Florida SR22 Insurance – What Is The Minimum Requirement?

Reader question:

What kind of coverage do I need on my Florida SR22 insurance policy?

Craig

Thanks for asking, Craig.

Right now, it’s kind of confusing to figure out what kind of Florida SR22 insurance coverage you need. The reason for this is because, for the next two months, Florida is a tort state, whereas the month before last and forty years before that, as well as starting on January 1st, 2008, Florida will be a no fault date. These three tort months have confused car insurance policy holders in Florida, especially those with Florida SR22 insurance who must make sure that they have the correct amount of coverage.

At the moment, this is the coverage required for your Florida SR22 insurance policy:

  • $10,000 bodily injury liability for a single person
  • $20,000 bodily injury liability for more than one person
  • $10,000 property damage liability

Before, it wasn’t as necessary to have higher levels of coverage for the above three, but if you must have a Florida SR22 insurance policy for the next few months, it might be a good idea if you raise your limits for liability, since there will be many people driving around without no fault insurance.

As of January 2008, you will also be required to have the following, which, unlike liability, will cover your own damages and injuries:

  • $10,000 Personal injury protection
  • $10,000 property damage liability

If you want to save money on your Florida SR22 insurance, then it is best to get the least amount possible when buying your policy. However, given the strange circumstances, you might want to think a bit before deciding to get only what is presently required for your Florida SR22 insurance. If you get all of the coverage now, then you will avoid any hassle and problems with filing your Florida SR22 insurance once no fault comes back in January.
